[UPon a CHAnce] - Sumptuary @ ACP

Last week on the show, we interviewed Alexia Sinclair on an upcoming show at the Australian Centre for Photography (ACP)

Alexia Sinclair - Louis XIV - The Sun King, 2010

Sumptuary is a group show featuring works by photomedia artists Garth Knight, Deborah Paauwe, Farrell & Parkin, Alexia Sinclair and Robyn Stacey. These artists explore the fabrics, costumes, jewellery and tableware of conspicuous consumption and absolute power.

Throughout history, sumptuary laws were enacted in an attempt (almost always unsuccessful) to constrain the acquisition and display of luxury goods. This was at times motivated by a sense of modesty, at times by a desire to maintain hierarchy and at times as a way to curb imports that threatened the domestic market.

Exhibition dates:
Friday 26 November - Thursday 23 December 2010
Saturday 8 January - Saturday 29 January 2011

[UPon a CHAnce] ARC - outDOOR cinema^^ Great Italian Masters

Addison Road Centre (ARC) are starting a new series of film screenings. This season is going to be dedicated to the Great Italian Masters. Pasolini, Rosellini, Scola, Fellini will be present with their art house master pieces.  Starting with Pier Paolo Pasolini’s “Mamma Roma”. Made in 1962, the film explores the social contradictions in post Second World War Italy. Critics didn't like the use of non professional actors. The general public didn't like the topic, and the Church was outraged because of the use of Christian imagery.  They were all united in condemning the film as immoral and it was taken to court where they failed to stop its presentation. Fascists also protested and attacked Pasolini at the film’s premiere.

“Indefatigably productive, ingenious, exasperating, slyly self-promoting, abject, generous, exploitative, devoted to the wretched of the earth with honest fervour and deluded romanticism” are some of the adjectives still applied to Pasolini’s  work and persona

Submissions are now open to the 2011 Australian Refugee Film Festival. Submissions are free and open to both Australian and international films that are up to 10-15 minutes in duration.

In particular, the festival are seeking films that address these  issues:
- environmental displacement due to climate change
- the refugee journey and the obstacles associated with it
- personal triumph stories of refugees and asylum seekers
- documented work of local and international organisations with refugees and asylum seekers.

Films do not have to be limited to the above topics; the main criterion is that the film engages with refugee and asylum seeker issues both nationally and internationally.
